Dementia

Remember when I said I’d start posting again last week? I didn’t forget; life decided it needed my attention more.

We lost my grandmother on Monday, March 21 and said goodbye on Saturday, March 25.  It was a crazy week and I’m not sure if it’s really hit yet.  She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s with Dementia a few months back and it was incredibly sad and quick.  Being the nerd I am, I went right into research mode, looking for documentaries and articles that would point me towards the newest research just in case.   There is no cure.  The most patients can hope for is to hold on to as much as they can for as long as they can.  It’s heartbreaking.

Two documentaries in particular stay with me.  The Truth About Dementia Angela Rippon watched it take her mother and make its way through some friends.  She introduced us to people suffering with it.  She underwent tests to see if she could be affected.

Can Alzheimer’s Be Stopped made me cry.  This PBS production is available on for streaming on Netflix.  Did you know that Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S.?  I knew it was deadly but did not think it was in the top 10.

If you decide to watch, be prepared for anger and sadness.

Join me in raising my mug to Creola.  She was one in a million.  She deserved better.
